Does Scalp Micropigmentation Hurt?
Does Scalp Micropigmentation Hurt? An Honest Answer from Someone Who's Had It
If the needle part is what's holding you back from booking a consultation - this one's for you.
It's one of the most common questions I get asked and I'm not going to give you a watered down answer to make it sound better than it is. I've had SMP myself so I know exactly what it feels like from the other side of the chair.
Here's the honest answer.
How does SMP work?
SMP uses a fine needle to deposit tiny dots of specialised pigment into the upper layer of the scalp. These dots replicate the look of natural hair follicles - creating the appearance of a shaved head, added density, or a restored hairline depending on what you're after.
The needle depth is significantly shallower than a traditional tattoo. That's one of the main reasons most clients are surprised by how manageable it actually is.
So does it hurt?
Most people describe it as a light scratching or mild stinging sensation. Similar to a tattoo but generally less intense. The scalp does have more nerve endings than somewhere like your arm or leg, so you will feel it - but the vast majority of clients find it very tolerable.
A few things affect how comfortable your session feels:
Where on the scalp is being treated. The hairline and temples tend to be more sensitive than the crown or back of the scalp. If you're having a full treatment you'll notice the difference between areas.
Your pain threshold. Everyone's different. Some clients barely react. Others find certain spots more noticeable. Both are completely normal.
How long the session runs. Towards the end of a longer session the scalp can become more sensitive from repeated contact. This is normal and expected - not a sign that something is wrong.
How relaxed you are. Tension makes everything feel worse. Most clients settle in quickly and are chatting and relaxed within the first fifteen minutes. I regularly have clients fall asleep in their sessions - which probably tells you more than anything else I could say.
What does the process look like?
Every new client at Signature Scalp starts with a free consultation. We sit down, look at your hair loss, talk through what you want to achieve, and build a treatment plan around you specifically.
Before any full treatment we do a patch test. A small amount of pigment is applied discreetly to check your skin's response and confirm the perfect shade for your skin tone and hair colour. We then wait at least 7 days for this to heal and settle before your first full session begins. If you decide not to go ahead, the patch test simply won't be visible.Treatment runs across three sessions, each spaced at least 7 days apart. This gives the pigment time to settle properly between appointments and lets us build the result gradually - which is what makes it look natural.
I hold a nationally accredited diploma in cosmetic tattooing and have spent years in the professional tattoo industry. Precision and client comfort are things I take seriously at every single session.
What happens after?
Your scalp may feel slightly tender and look a little red immediately after - similar to mild sunburn. This settles within a few hours for most people.
Every Signature Scalp client receives a full aftercare pack including aftercare cream, hair nets, baby wipes, and written aftercare instructions. We walk through everything before you leave.
For the first few days:
Keep your scalp dry and avoid heavy sweating
Stay out of direct sunlight
Avoid swimming or saunas
Don't rub or scratch the treated area
Most people have no issues at all.
