SMP Aftercare - Everything You Need to Know

SMP Aftercare - Everything You Need to Know

Getting your SMP done is the exciting part. Looking after it properly afterwards is what protects your investment and makes sure your result looks its best long term.

At Signature Scalp every client receives a full aftercare pack before they leave and we walk through everything together. But here's a detailed breakdown you can come back to whenever you need it.

Immediately after your session

Your scalp will likely feel tender and look slightly red - think mild sunburn. This is completely normal and settles within a few hours for most people. Don't touch it, don't panic, just let it settle.

The first 7 days

The first week is the most important. The pigment is settling into the skin and the area is at its most vulnerable during this time.

Keep it dry. Avoid washing your scalp, swimming, saunas, steam rooms, and anything that causes heavy sweating. Moisture in the first few days can affect how the pigment settles and the quality of your result.

Stay out of the sun. UV exposure can fade fresh pigment quickly. If you're going outside wear a hat or stay in the shade where possible.

Don't touch it. No rubbing, scratching, or picking. If the area feels itchy - which is normal as it heals - resist the urge. Scratching can pull pigment out of the skin and affect the result.

Skip the gym. Heavy exercise means heavy sweating. Give it at least 5 days before getting back into intense workouts.

No swimming. Chlorine and salt water are both harsh on fresh pigment. Stay out of pools and the ocean for at least 2 weeks.

What's in your aftercare pack

Every Signature Scalp client receives:

Aftercare cream - to keep the scalp moisturised as it heals

Hair nets - to protect the area while sleeping

Baby wipes - for gentle cleansing if needed

Full written aftercare instructions

Use the cream as directed and follow the written instructions. If you have any questions at any point just get in touch - we're always happy to help.

Between sessions

Remember that your full treatment runs across three sessions, each spaced at least 7 days apart. Between sessions the same basic rules apply - keep the area moisturised, protect it from sun exposure, and avoid anything harsh on the scalp.

Each session builds on the last, adding depth and density gradually. How well you look after the treated area between appointments directly affects the quality of the final result.

Long term care

Once your treatment is fully healed the ongoing care is simple and straightforward.

Moisturise regularly. Keeping your scalp hydrated helps the pigment stay looking fresh and vibrant for longer.

Use SPF. Sun exposure is the number one cause of SMP fading over time. A daily SPF on your scalp - especially in the Australian sun - will significantly extend the life of your result. This is something we feel strongly about at Signature Scalp and it's the single best thing you can do long term.

Be sensible outdoors. This doesn't mean staying inside forever - just wear a hat when you're out for extended periods and be mindful of prolonged direct sun exposure.

How long will your result last?

SMP is a permanent procedure - the pigment doesn't disappear. However like all cosmetic tattoo work it will naturally soften and fade slightly over time. Most clients return for a redarkening session every 3 to 6 years to keep things looking sharp and defined. This is a simple top-up, not a full treatment from scratch.

How quickly it fades depends on your skin type, sun exposure, and how well you follow aftercare both immediately after treatment and over the long term.
