Scalp Micropigmentation for Women - A Real Story from Signature Scalp Adelaide

Hair loss isn't just a men's issue. It affects millions of women and the emotional impact can be significant - yet it's talked about far less, and the solutions available are often designed with men in mind.

At Signature Scalp we treat women regularly and the results can be genuinely life changing. This is one of those stories.

Kate's story

My wife Kate experienced post partum hair loss after we had our baby. For a lot of new mums this is a reality nobody really warns you about - the hormonal shift after pregnancy can cause significant shedding, often around the sides and temples where it's most visible.

For Kate the loss was concentrated on the sides of her scalp. Noticeable to her every single day, and the kind of thing that quietly chips away at your confidence even when you're doing everything else right.

As someone who had been through SMP myself and spent years in the cosmetic tattoo industry, I knew exactly what was possible. But treating your own wife is a different experience entirely - you want it to be perfect.

The treatment

We started with a free consultation and a patch test as we do with every client. For Kate there was an added consideration - she likes to change her hair colour. Going darker, going blonde, mixing it up. A fixed dark pigment would look great in winter and obvious in summer.

So we created a completely custom shade. Light enough to blend naturally whether her hair is dark or blonde, placed with precision along the sides where the thinning was most visible.

Three sessions later, each spaced at least 7 days apart - the result was a noticeably denser, fuller appearance along the sides. The kind of result where people can't quite put their finger on why you look so good, they just know that you do.

Kate fell asleep during a couple of the sessions. Which I think tells you everything you need to know about how uncomfortable it was.

She loves the result. So do I.

Who else is SMP right for?

Kate's experience with post partum hair loss is one of the most common reasons women come to see us, but it's far from the only one. SMP is an excellent solution for women experiencing:

Post partum hair loss - thinning around the sides and temples after pregnancy,

Female pattern hair loss - gradual thinning across the crown or parting,

Alopecia - including alopecia areata, totalis, and universalis,

Thinning hair from hormonal changes or medical treatmentScarring from previous hair transplant procedures

What makes women's SMP different?

Treating women well requires a different approach to treating men. The goal is almost never a shaved head look - it's density, fullness, and a natural hairline that works with your existing hair rather than replacing it.

Pigment selection is critical. We work with your natural hair colour and take into account how you style and colour your hair. For women who colour regularly like Kate, we factor that into the shade we create - so the result looks right whether you're dark, blonde, or anything in between.

The placement is also different. Rather than replicating a hairline from scratch, we're working with what's there - adding density where it's been lost and blending seamlessly with your existing hair so nobody can tell where your hair ends and the SMP begins.

Does SMP hurt for women?

Kate fell asleep. Twice.

Everyone's experience is different and some areas of the scalp are more sensitive than others. But the honest answer is that most clients - men and women alike - find it far more manageable than they expected going in.

How long does it last?

SMP is a permanent procedure. The pigment won't disappear but will naturally soften slightly over time. Most clients return for a simple redarkening session every 3 to 6 years to keep things looking fresh. For women who colour their hair regularly we factor longevity into the shade selection from the start.

What does the process look like?

Every new client starts with a free consultation - in person at our studio inside Inkdulgence Tattoo in Marden, Adelaide, or via video call. We assess your hair loss, talk through your goals, and build a treatment plan around you specifically.

Before your first full session we conduct a patch test. This confirms the perfect shade for your skin tone and hair colour and checks for any reactions before committing to a full treatment. The patch test is placed discreetly - if you decide not to go ahead it simply won't be noticeable.

Treatment then runs across three sessions, each at least 7 days apart. Every client receives a full aftercare pack including aftercare cream, hair nets, baby wipes, and written aftercare instructions.
