What is Scalp Micropigmentation? Everything You Need to Know
If you're noticing your hair thinning, your hairline creeping back, or finding yourself reaching for the comb more creatively than you used to - you're not alone, and you're probably wondering what your options actually are.
My name is Michael, and I'm the founder of Signature Scalp in Adelaide. I've had SMP myself. Not because I'd lost a dramatic amount of hair, but because I didn't want to be the guy doing the comb-over. A shaved head is a clean, masculine look - and once I made the decision and went through the process, I never looked back.
That experience, combined with years in the tattoo industry and a nationally accredited diploma in cosmetic tattooing, is what drives everything we do at Signature Scalp.
Let me give you a proper explanation of what SMP actually is.
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation - commonly known as SMP or a hair tattoo - is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure where tiny dots of specialised pigment are deposited into the scalp. These dots are placed with precision to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles.
The result depends on what you're after:
A full shaved head look for those with significant hair loss
Added density and thickness for those with thinning hair
A restored or refined hairline
Camouflage for scars from hair transplants, surgery, or injury
Unlike a traditional tattoo, SMP uses pigments specifically formulated for the scalp and hair loss industry. The technique, needle depth, and dot placement are all different - which is why proper training matters enormously.
Who is SMP suitable for?
SMP works for a wide range of people and hair loss situations:
Men experiencing pattern baldness or a receding hairline
Women with thinning hair or alopecia
Anyone wanting to add the appearance of density to existing hair
People looking to conceal hair transplant scarring
Those who simply want a clean, confident shaved head look without the patchiness
How long does SMP last?
SMP is a permanent procedure - the pigment doesn't disappear. However like all cosmetic tattoo work, it will naturally fade and soften over time. Most clients return for a redarkening session every 3 to 6 years to keep results looking fresh and defined. This is a simple top-up, not a full treatment from scratch.
What does the Signature Scalp process look like?
We don't just jump straight into treatment. Every new client starts with a free consultation - we sit down, assess your hair loss, talk through your goals, and design a treatment plan built specifically for you.
Before your first full session we conduct a patch test. We apply a small amount of pigment to confirm the perfect shade match for your skin tone and hair colour, then allow at least 7 days for this to heal and settle. This also lets us check for any reactions before committing to a full treatment. The patch test is placed discreetly - if you decide not to go ahead, it simply won't be noticeable.
Once the patch test is complete and we're happy with everything, your treatment begins across three sessions, each spaced at least 7 days apart. This spacing allows the pigment to settle properly between appointments and lets us build depth and density gradually for the most natural result.
What about aftercare?
Every Signature Scalp client receives a full aftercare pack which includes:
Aftercare cream
Hair nets
Baby wipes
Full written aftercare instructions
We walk you through everything at your appointment. For the first few days simply keep your scalp dry, avoid heavy sweating, stay out of direct sunlight, and don't rub or scratch the treated area.
Why does the practitioner matter so much?
This is something I feel strongly about. SMP is a skilled cosmetic procedure - the results you get are entirely dependent on the person holding the needle. There are providers out there who've completed a weekend course and are calling themselves specialists. You deserve better than that.
At Signature Scalp I hold a nationally recognised, accredited diploma in cosmetic tattooing - not a certificate from a short course. Combined with years of professional experience in the tattoo industry and my own personal experience as an SMP client, I understand this process from every angle.
I know what it feels like to sit in that chair. I know what questions you're asking yourself. And I know what a good result looks like because I'm walking around with one every day.
